The Dental Implant Procedure

This article is intended as a broad guide only and relates to the most common dental implants.

For details relating to your own specific circumstances and prospective dental procedure you should speak to your dental implant surgeon.

1.Consultation and Scans
Your Dental Implant Surgeon will hold a detailed consultation with you at which scans will be taken of your teeth and jaw.  Depending on the results of the scans he/she will discuss the various options and procedures with you and a course of treatment will be agreed upon.

2.Time frame
The factors that will determine the period and number of consultations over which your treatment will occur include:

• Your oral and dental health.
• If an extraction is needed and if a bone graft is needed.
• The teeth replaced and the number of teeth being replaced.

Time frames can vary from ‘same day’ to about a year.

An ‘Immediate Implant’ Procedure (where the tooth is still in place but is to be removed)

Step 1

• Your mouth is thoroughly numbed with local anaesthesia.
• the tooth is extracted and the implant is placed into the bone at the same time! For teeth that cannot be saved this does away with a separate dedicated implant appointment. It is great for patients because there is only one ‘surgical’ appointment with no extra local anaesthetic, with no additional time off work, nor discomfort from a second procedure.
  
  Often for front teeth, a temporary tooth can be constructed immediately on the implant until everything has healed so that you do not have to be without a front tooth! It does away with the need to wear a temporary denture while the implant is healing.
  With advances in dental implant treatment, ‘immediate implant’ treatment is the preferred treatment choice at Southside Implant centre.

Step 2

• The implant dentist will then start a series of appointments to make your new implant crown.  This usually includes making impressions of your teeth from which precise working models of your mouth are made for proper alignment. Your crown is fabricated on these models by a skilled dental laboratory.
• The final step is the final placement of your new crown.

A ‘1-stage’ Implant Procedure (where the tooth is already missing)
Step 1  Your mouth is thoroughly numbed with local anaesthesia.

• An incision is made in your gum to expose the jaw bone.
• The implant is placed in the bone.

A healing abutment is screwed on to the implant and the gum is sutured around the abutment. This does away with the need for a second procedure and is a simpler and cheaper treatment option.

Step 2 – The implant is restored by impressions as per the standard technique.

A ‘2-stage’ Implant Procedure (for more complicated treatments where the tooth is already missing )

  Step 1

• An incision is made in your gums to expose the jaw underneath where the implant will go.
• A drill is used to create a space for the implant in the bone.
• The implant itself is then screwed in place. A bone graft may be placed if required.
• A second component (a cover screw) will be screwed into the implant and will remain in place during the healing process.
• The gums are closed over the implant and sutured.
• Over the course of the next few months, the implant fuses to the bone.

Step 2

• The implant is exposed by another small incision is made in your gums.
• A small extension, called an abutment, is placed on the implant.

Step 3

• The implant is restored by impressions as per the standard technique.
